Please note: Because online materials can potentially change URLs, APA recommends providing a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), when it is available, as opposed to the URL. DOIs are an attempt to provide stable, long-lasting links for online articles. They are unique to their documents and consist of a long alphanumeric code. Many—but not all.
Referencing module texts 1: Introduction When you're writing an assignment, or any other written work which will be seen by others, you are expected to acknowledge the sources you've used. Using a referencing style will help you to present this information in a format that anyone reading your work will recognise and understand.
A Brief History of the APA Format. APA stands for American Psychological Association, the scientific organisation that assembles the publishing manual for APA referencing. The style was developed in 1929 by a group of scientists to standardise scientific writing. It was created in the hopes that it would provide a coherent and professional.
APA does not prescribe a specific format for study guides, so they should be treated like books, online books, or chapters in an edited book. Generally, it is a good idea to check with your lecturer about how they would like course material referenced.
General information. If you are referencing the PDF version, use the same format as the print version, which includes the place of publication and publisher, but add a note to say where the study guide was retrieved from - for example, SCU Blackboard. If the guide has been revised by another person who is acknowledged on the guide, refer to the example provided under Print version.
